The precise origins of Bilbao have not been determined. However, a settlement had already been established and had significantly developed on both banks of the Ria del Nervion before it officially became a villa. It was Don Diego Lopez de Haro V, lord of Vizcaya, who gave the city his title in the year 1300, due to its great importance as a commercial and maritime centre at the time. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bilbao was the great economic icon of the Basque Country and amongst the most important cities in the State.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was inaugurated in 1997 by King Juan Carlos I of Spain. Built alongside the Nervion River, this is one of several museums belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The building is one of the most admired works of contemporary architecture and represents one of those rare subjects on which critics, academics, and the general public all are unanimous.
A reference point for lovers of contemporary art, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a symbol of how a spectacular construction, such as the one by Frank Ghery, may contribute to the regeneration of an area. The permanent collection of this museum includes works by the most famous artists of the past four decades of this century; they are integrated by works lent by the Salomón R. Guggenheim Foundation, including significant examples of pop art, minimalism, “arte povera”, conceptual art, abstract expressionism, etc. This is also the case with the special programs promoted by the foundation. Moreover, several rooms in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao are dedicated to monographic installations while others house works for a specific location, namely expressly commissioned for this museum. Contemporary Basque and Spanish art are also represented by a selection of works by the best artists who, on the whole, provide a detailed impression of the current trends in their art.
