Pico - Climbing in Pico: Brace yourself for the challenge of a lifetime! With our exciting tour climb Portugal’s highest peak and national summit, the Pico Alto. Located on the secluded Azorean island of Pico, this beautiful volcano waits for you to undertake a journey you will never forget.
Comprising 9 volcanic islands, the remote archipelago of the Azores are set like jewels in the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1500km from the Portuguese coast. These little gems offer a paradisiacal land full of natural splendour surrounded by the never-ending blue of the Atlantic Ocean. At the centre of these islands sits the Pico Island, dominated by the towering Pico Alto, said to be ‘the soul’ of the island. With an altitude of 2.351 meters, it is the highest point of Portugal. Its round crater has a diameter of about 500 meters and a depth that reaches 30 meters, covered by a thick endemic vegetation which falls away before disappearing altogether at the top. From there rises up the Piquinho, a volcanic cone that ascends some 50 meters above the edge of the crater, with three or four fumaroles at the top. Nothing will prepare you for reaching the summit and surveying the epic beauty of the endless Atlantic Ocean and the other shimmering Azorean islands
The climb calls for experience and some physical preparation, appropriate clothes and footwear, backpack, water, hat, sun protector, cardigan/ sweater and a waterproof and of course photo or video camera. The climb must never be attempted without a guide; the ascent and descent will take up to 5, 30 hours, allowing time to appreciate landscapes of rare beauty and natural phenomena.
