The main square is a mixture of enchanting old churches and bars, cafés and restaurants. Wander through the tunnel, past the bell tower and through the old castle to the fantastic Fisherman’s Beach. One of the most endearing aspects of Albufeira is its array of styles, the result of a devastating earthquake during the 18th century. Consequently, a large amount of local landmarks now display a fusion of architectural styles combined with several centuries- lookout for old Moorish sights dotted around the old town.
Admire the uniquely Portuguese Manueline-style St Sebastian’s Church, the 18th century St Anne’s Church and the restored Gothic-style Mercy Chapel. The belfry of the parish church is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks and is not to be missed. The tower is topped with an eight-bell carillon and the stairwell stands at an impressive 28 metres high.
