Machu Picchu, which in Quechua means Old Mountain, is believed by archaeologists to have been built by Inca emperor Pachacuti as a holiday estate up in the heavens. His reign ended in the early 1470s yet within a century the city would be abandoned following the Spanish conquest. Considered both a masterpiece of architecture and engineering, Machu Picchu is home to over 200 buildings including the monumental Main Square, the Royal Quarters, the Circular Towers, the Sacred Sun Dial and the Burial Grounds. Depending on your schedule, lunch will be served either before or after the start of the tour. We return by train to Ollanta where on arrival you’ll be transferred back to the hotel.
