Incas Sacred vallley - Private: Explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas with this private tour from Cuzco and visit some of the sites most associated with this short-lived and mysterious civilisation. Discover the picturesque riverside village of Pisac, visit the ruins of the ancient hillside fortress of Ollantaytambo and uncover the archaeological riches of the royal city of Chinchero. This informative and thought-provoking tour provides a fascinating insight into an empire that was wiped off the face of the earth by just a handful of conquistadors.
The Sacred Valley is really that of the River Urubamba to the north of Cuzco and features stunning Andean landscapes resplendent with fauna and flora. Begin your adventure at the picture-postcard village of Pisac, which is on the banks of the river. Today it is famed for its vibrant and colourful market, where you can browse the many traditional products such as panpipes, ojota sandals, ponchos and chullos (the ubiquitous hats with earflaps made from alpaca wool). The ruins of Inca Pisac are on a hilltop overlooking the valley.
Continue to Ollantaytambo with a number of stops en route at places of interest. This hillside fortress was a typical example of Inca urban planning during the reign of 15th century Emperor Pachacuti, who also built Machu Picchu. It remains one of the most remarkable archaeological sites of the empire. Enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant before proceeding to Chinchero, which was one of the most important centres in the Inca Empire. Today a church stands over the ruins of the former temple, an example of the ‘extirpation of idolatries’ imposed by the conquistadors.
