Rioja is a region of Spain where the production of wine yields excellent results. It has achieved Denominación de Origen Calificada (Qualified designation of origin). Rioja wines are made from grapes coming from this area, but also from Navarre and the province of Álava. Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa are the three zones in which Rioja gets divided.
Rioja red wines are classified into four categories: Rioja, Rioja Crianza, Rioja Reserva and Rioja Gran Reserva. Rioja is the youngest type of wine with less than a year in an oak barrel. Crianza wines are aged at least two years (at least one of them in oak). Reserva wines are aged at least three years (at least one of them in oak).
