Excursions in Salou Area / Costa Dorada - Casa Mila (La Pedrera) Barcelona
Excursions in Salou Area / Costa Dorada: Come and discover one of Barcelona's most well-known landmarks in this tour of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi's iconic, mind-boggling Casa Milà.
The rippling facade of this modernist building, its sensuous folds and lack of straight lines have been variously compared to an underwater palace or an Easter cake. Built between 1906 and 1910 in the upmarket Eixample district of Barcelona it was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1984. It was opened to the public three years later and is now one of the ten most popular attractions in the city.
The Casa Milà was ahead of its times when it was built and has lost none of its avant garde character since then. The building is a reflection of the artistic and imaginative powers of Gaudí in his prime. The architect’s great creative freedom and imaginative ornamental designs are visible in every detail, from the wrought iron balconies, the painted frescoes and the roof terrace, known as the garden of warriors with its famous chimney stacks, bearing a resemblance to helmeted warriors. Gaudi was initially inspired by certain great baroque works but over time developed structural shapes and volumes devoid of rational rigidity or any classic premise and the whole building was built around the symbolism of the ship of life.
The house is open every day from 9.00am to 6.30pm (last admission 6pm) between November 5 and February28. And from 9am to 8pm (last admission 7.30pm) from March 1 to November 4. It is located at 92 Passeig de Gràcia in the stylish Eixample district.

Excursions in Salou Area / Costa Dorada - Montserrat and Roc de San Gaieta Tour
Excursions in Salou Area / Costa Dorada: Worship at Catalonia’s holiest mountain and see the legendary Black Virgin of Montserrat. This full-day guided tour is more than a religious experience – it’s an adventure that is capped off with a visit to a picturesque seaside town. You will enjoy stunning views, see staggering rock formations and even hear one of the most angelic choirs known to God.
Montserrat has been a place of pilgrimage ever since some shepherd boys saw a light coming out of a cave in the year 880. When they explored its source, they found a statue of Our Lady. It proved too heavy to move, so the local bishop declared that the Virgin wanted to stay there. Since then, the statue has been venerated and it is believed to have turned black thanks to centuries of smoke from candles. Over the years, the complex expanded and is now the largest Benedictine monastery in Spain – all surrounded by staggering rock formations.
Enjoy a guided panoramic tour of the exterior of the monastery; wander the courtyards and cloisters before entering the basilica to pay homage to Our Lady. The basilica itself is a sight to behold and is famed for the angelic voices of the young boys’ choir (which has July off), one of the oldest music schools of its kind in Europe. It is truly soul-stirring stuff.
Lastly we visit Roc Sant Gaieta, a Spanish seaside village where the streets and patios harmoniously blend all styles and typical Iberian architecture: Gothic, Romanesque and Mediterranean houses. Breathe in the fresh sea air and admire the picture postcard views in your free time before we return to Salou.
End/closing time: At 8pm.
Languages: This tour is available in Dutch, French, German and Spanish.
Others: Please dress appropriately dressed for the monastery. You are required to wear long trousers or smart shorts (no swimming gear), with shoulders covered.

Excursions in Salou Area / Costa Dorada - Peniscola and Tortosa
Excursions in Salou Area / Costa Dorada: The first traces of Tortosa date back to Iberian times, and it was most likely the city of Hibera, capital of Ilercavonia. During the Roman period the city was called Dertosa, until it was occupied by the Muslims in 714 AD and became the Kingdom of the Muslim Taifa in 1035. Remaining from this period is the main building of Suda Castle, situated in the upper part of the city, offering magnificent views of the Ebro River. Suda Castle became the residence of the Montcadas and the Knights Templars. Later, King James I chose the fortress as the base from which to start the conquest of the territory of Valencia.
We make a stop in Tortosa Here we make a short guided tour along a few interesting buildings, like e. g. the former escorxador (abattoir), a building in modernist style, the Jewish quarter, the cathedral, the pilgrim’s gate (and its legend). We leave Tortosa and we go to the “Pearl of the Costa del Azahar”, to visit the “City in the Sea”: Peñíscola, the Mont St Michel of Spain. Many peoples in the Mediterranean Area had their colony here, like the Fenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians and Romans. Also the Arabs arrived here in 714 with their leader Tarik. Also the name of Peñíscola has an arab origin.
Peñiscola is crowned at the top of rock surrounded by the set of walls that protect the Old Town, which once was the residence of the Knights Templar and even of Pope Benedict XXIII, known as ‘Papa Luna’ (Moon Pope). In 1931 the castle was declared as National Monument Of History and Art: and the Old Town in 1972 as Historical and Artistic Complex. In the sixties of the last century Peñíscola was chosen by Hollywood for the realization of the movie ‘El Cid’ with Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren.
All these features make Peñiscola one of the most picturesque towns of the Spanish coast. And after the Alhambra in Granada it is the most visited Spanish Historical and Cultural Monument. We leave Peñiscola around 4pm and on the way back to Salou we cross the area of the Ebro Delta with its rice fields and colonies of flamingoes. During this excursion you can almost touch the important buildings of the early Spanish history, feel the presence of kings, knights and popes, territory of myths and legends.
Duration: Approx. 10 hours.
End/closing time: 7pm.
Languages: English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch. Others: Admission to Santa Maria castle not included.
