Rio de Janeiro Excursions & Tours - Beautiful Búzios – private
Rio de Janeiro Excursions & Tours: Beautiful Búzios is one of Brazil’s most iconic resorts with a history that dates all the way back to the country’s colonial origins. The early Portuguese settlers used it as a base for whaling and the harvesting of the Caesalpinia echinata tree, better known as the brazilwood – the tree that gave the country its name. It remained a small fishing village for centuries until it became one of the jet set locations of the Sixties.
Screen siren Brigitte Bardot put Buzios on the map when she visited the resort which, from that time on, became the most sought-after spot in the whole Rio de Janeiro coast. Without losing the magic of its origins, Buzios offers heavenly beauties mixed with a hectic nightlife.
Armação dos Búzios is located 193 km from the city of Rio and together with Cabo Frio, Araruama and Arraial do Cabo it is part of the Costa do Sol. The area is known as Região dos Lagos and the peninsula boasts 23 beaches: Geribá, Tartaruga, João Fernandes, João Fernandinho, Ferradura, Ferradurinha, Azeda, Azedinha, Ossos, Manguinhos, Tucuns, Brava, Amores, Armação, Forno, Foca, Olho de Boi, Caravelas, José Gonçalves, Virgens, Canto, Rasa, and Moças.
Whale hunting was practiced in the area and the name Armação dos Búzios comes from the process of separating the meat from the bones. Also, Praia dos Ossos, a well-known beach in the area, takes her name from the great quantity of whales' bones left on the shoreline. City lights used to be fuelled by whale oil.
Meeting/pick-up point: Collection from downtown hotels.
Duration: Ten hours.
Start/opening time: 8am.

Rio de Janeiro Excursions & Tours - Favela Feelings: Rocinha Walking Tour
Rio de Janeiro Excursions & Tours: Get to know the largest favela in Brazil on this tour that busts myths and shatters stereotypes. This isn’t a ‘slum tour’ — it’s a chance for you to learn about the urban history and experience the real culture of these favela communities on the city’s hillsides. We’ll explore streets and alleys, wander past indie shops and bars, chat with locals, and eventually reach a rooftop with an amazing view of the community and the city below. With a local guide by your side, you’ll come to understand what local life is really like, as you engage with the people who call the favelas their home.
HIGHLIGHTS:
* Experience daily life in Rocinha, the largest favela in Brazil * Wander the vibrant streets of this “city” within Rio that’s full of contrasts, local stories, and colourful culture * Take in amazing views of São Conrado and Gavea Rock from a local's house rooftop * Gain a better understanding of urban development and favelas in Rio de Janeiro * Learn about the local economy and the independent businesses that make up communities like Rocinha
You’ll start your Rio tour learning about how the slums, called favelas, developed throughout the city. As we drive from the artistic, affluent area of Gavea into the massive favela of Rocinha, the contrasts in what you see out your window will highlight the inequalities plaguing Rio’s people. Rocinha is the largest, most populated favela in all of Brazil, and our first stop will be atop a hill from which you’ll have views of both sides of life in Rio de Janeiro.
As we enter the favela, the alleys ahead will tell the stories of uncontrolled urban development in one of the biggest cities in the world. Did you know, a quarter of the Carioca population still lives in favelas? And yet, despite the stereotype of dangerous neighbourhoods filled with pain and suffering, we’ll show you how these are vibrant places with lots of life and positive energy.
To help you get to truly know the area, we’ll stop at a local’s house where you can not only chat and learn about the community, but also take in an astonishing view from the house rooftop. We’ll explore around the neighbourhood, talking to locals, visiting the shops and bars, and authentically engaging with local life.
Next up, we’ll make our way downhill through the neighbourhood streets, taking in the views of colourful houses painting the landscape. * Check out the Christ the Redeemer statue, one of the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World
* See where Michael Jackson’s Rio music video was filmed
* Treat yourself to some of most amazing views Rio has to offer, including Guanabara Bay and Botafago
Blessed with the most stunning natural setting, Rio de Janeiro is a city that is as famous for its beauty as it is for its poverty. Stretching up into the mountains that hug glistening Guanabara Bay are the city’s vast, and often misunderstood, shantytowns known as favelas.
From beautiful vistas and iconic locations, to some of the communities that have helped make this city the melting pot that it is, you’re sure to find Rio a captivating and complex place that can steal your heart forever.
On this full day Rio city tour we'll explore the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, see what local life is really like in a Rio favela, travel around the city like a local, experience the Bohemian vibe in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood, and drink in some pretty epic views of the city.
First up - downtown! While this is mostly a Rio walking tour, we'll start with a little public transit, shall we? Take the subway downtown so you can experience how locals get around Rio and help orientate yourself in the city.
We'll hop off at Carioca Station and wander through the Financial District, home of huge companies such as Petrobras and BNDES. Check out Carioca Square, once the main source of drinking water in Rio, transported in by the Aqueducts of Lapa.
From here, we'll climb aboard the tram for the journey up to Santa Teresa, which is a 20 minute ride over the aqueducts which are now used as the tram route. This is the last tram line in Brazil that is used solely for transportation purposes.
Hopping off at Largo dos Guimaraes, it's time to explore the cobblestone streets of Santa Teresa! We'll wander about on foot and discover beautiful architecture, art galleries, restaurants, and local costumes that characterise Santa Teresa.
One of Rio's oldest neighbourhoods, Santa Teresa, situated high on a hill overlooking Rio, enchants locals and visitors alike with its cobbled streets and eclectic architectural styles. The views of the city centre and the bay aren't too shabby either. (Okay, they're stunning, but that's hardly a surprise. . . we're in Rio, after all!).
Previously a neighbourhood dominated by the elite, with their departure to more modern suburbs of Rio, Santa Teresa has been transformed into an artistic centre with many artists choosing the area as their preferred place of residence. Among the attractions in Santa Teresa is the Ruins Park and its gorgeous view over downtown Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay. Many visitors compare Santa Teresa to the bohemian district of Montmartre in Paris, and we'd stay that's a pretty fair comparison.
During the Carnival, many street bands perform on the streets and the most famous one is “Bloco das Carmelitas”, which was named after the local convent, which we'll see on our way back towards the Lapa District. As our time in Santa Teresa winds down, we have one final (and rather important) stop to make: Selaron's Staircase. This masterpiece and picturesque icon is one of the late artist's most famous pieces, and is without a doubt one of the highlights of this Rio tour.
Our Rio tour will continue with an incredible bird's eye view of the city from the base of the Statue of Christ. This enormous white statue keeps constant watch over Rio, offering sweeping 360 degree views of the city’s natural wonders: beaches, lagoons, forests, bays, and mountains that seem to rise from the ocean.
It’s no wonder that the ‘cristo’ statue was recently selected as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Soak up the views, pick out some of Rio’s most famous sights, and snap a must-have picture before getting a very different view of the city.
Next, it’s time to trade in this tourist icon for something less visited, and step into the Santa Marta favela. Accompanied by your local guide, wander through the community, meeting the people who live here and see the places made famous in the Michael Jackson video. Stroll the narrow alleys, learn about local life, and dispel some of the myths about these vibrant communities.
In the heart of the favela, take a moment to admire the breathtaking views over Guanabara Bay and Botafogo area from Michael Jackson’s lookout. For anyone wishing to experience the real Rio, you simply can’t miss this experience. A full day, a fullly Carioca experience.
Duration: 8 hours.
Start/opening time: At 9am.

Rio de Janeiro Excursions & Tours - Tour of Santa Teresa and Selaron Steps
Rio de Janeiro Excursions & Tours: Meet us at Cine Odeon right in front of Cinelândia Metro Station. The common way to get up to Santa Teresa is by Tram through the Lapa Arcs (Arcos da Lapa) a former aqueduct, but the tram line is temporarily deactivated, so we go up by bus. From there the little cobbled streets invite you to be acquainted with the charming neighbourhood of Santa Teresa. The neighbourhood has a complete different vibe from the rest of Rio. Here Old Rio comes alive. Santa Teresa is a neighbourhood where casualty and tradition meet.
It is full of artists who find in Santa Teresa an inspiring scenery and way of life that helps them create their art and work on their craft whatever that is. At night, it hosts bohemian crowd of Rio, which dodge the most popular places and go for the lesser know little spots amongst Santa Teresa’s inspiring architecture.
In Santa Teresa there is a wild variety of interesting places to get to know. From the Ruins Park (Parque das Ruínas) where you get to see one of the most beautiful views of the lesser known Rio, to the random exhibits organized by the different artists’ workshops around the neighbourhood.
Leave Santa Teresa’s treasured little secrets behind as you walk down the Selaron stairway steps to reach Lapa. The beautiful steps done in ceramic by artist Jorge Selarón are one of a kind. The Chilean Selarón was in love with Rio and that love shows on these very steps. The pieces of ceramic were placed on top of the paintings done by the locals who were decorating the stairs in show of support for the National Soccer Team in 1994’s World Cup, won by Brazil.
The Selarón Steps, the Ruins Park, the bars and the cobbled hills are just a bit of what Santa Teresa is all about, but walk through its streets and you’ll see why the neighbourhood is one of Rio’s hidden gems.
Meeting/pick-up point: In front of the Odeon Movie Theather right at the exit of Cinelândia Metro Station.
Duration: Four hours.
Start/opening time: Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 2pm.
