Azores Excursions & Tours: Discover the lovely northern coast of Sao Miguel in the company of an experienced guide with this three-hour walking tour, followed by a visit to the island’s dramatic volcanic vents. Ideal for people who love spending time in the great outdoors and want to experience at first hand the natural and scenic delights of the largest and most enchanting island in the Azores.
Setting out from the charming settlement of Lomba da Maia, the trail passes through a series of contrasting landscapes: at first, densely-growing vegetation surrounds the path on all sides but this then gives way to swiftly-flowing streams running next to the trail, before the vista opens out to reveal some spectacular sea views. Old watermills dotted next to the route provide reminders of ancient industries and the less complicated lifestyles of a now bygone age. The path then descends to one of the most outstanding beaches in the Azores, the Praia da Viola, where there will be a chance to swim and take a well-earned rest. The end of the trail offers some of the most captivating views of the north coast.
In the afternoon the excursion continues with a visit to Furnas, an extraordinary volcanic region where the landscape is pitted with a natural phenomenon known as fumaroles - fissures in the earth’s crust that send out high-pressure steam and gas: an appropriately dramatic climax to a spectacular day.

Duration: Eight hours approx.
Start/opening time: 9am.
