Excursions in La Manga - Costa Calida - Augusteum
Excursions in La Manga - Costa Calida: Step back in time to the golden age of the Roman Empire and discover this true archaeological gem that will give you a fascinating glimpse of a Roman city in its full splendour in the first and second centuries AD.
The Augusteum was a Roman temple that was situated next to the Forum in the commercial and religious hub of the city where ceremonies were held by the priests who served the Emperor during the Augustan age.
In the lower part of the Augusteum, you will find the reception area to the site, which will allow you to find out first-hand about the original structure of Roman Carthago Nova (Cartagena). There is also an informative exhibition about the Forum explaining its significant role in life in the Roman cities. Before entering the temple, a fascinating second exhibition will take you through the utensils, coins and other ornamental and decorative items found in the imperial city.
Admire the beauty of this symmetrical building designed to highlight the magnificence of the emperor Octavian Augustus. Access to the temple was through a patio with porticoes that was designed so that visitors could see from the entrance the sculpture of the emperor displayed in the central room. This room was flanked by two small fountain-ponds that would certainly have been decorated inside with sculptures. The roof was also covered with beautiful decorative motifs alluding to the Emperor. Also outstanding in the rich décor was the marble, covering floors and walls, which was brought from the best quarries of the Roman Empire in Italy, Greece and Tunisia. You will also find other secondary rooms, which were used for service or passage.
Since its refurbishment in 2001 this museum site is a must-see destination for all those looking for a genuine cultural and historic experience of life in the Roman Empire.

Excursions in La Manga - Costa Calida - Museum-Refuge of the civil war
Excursions in La Manga - Costa Calida: Learn about one of the most tragic conflicts of the 20th century with this informative tour that will urge you to reflect on the repercussions of war and the need to co-exist in order to achieve a peaceful existence on the planet.
During the Civil War, Cartagena was one of the cities in Spain worst hit by bombing. The fact that the city was the Republican fleet's centre of operations made it a favourite target for the Italian and German air forces serving Franco.
To defend themselves against the bombing, which began in October 1936, the population organised the construction of a number of air-raid shelters. The Calle Gisbert shelter was one of the biggest shelters, holding around 5,500 people.
Explore the galleries in this shelter and get a glimpse of everyday life during the Spanish Civil War and see how people tried to protect themselves against the many air raids that devastated the city as you learn about the different types of shelters and the materials used to withstand the impact of bombs. You will also find chilling testimonies of those who suffered the consequences of this conflict and how it changed their lives. All of this is portrayed in a collection of original pictures from the Spanish Civil War taken from the Spanish Film Archive.
Finally, take a moment to reflect in the tranquillity of the last section of the museum, a peaceful environment which features interpretations of war and peace by children of the Civil War and today’s children.
Opening times vary according to season.

Excursions in La Manga - Costa Calida - Panoramic lift
Excursions in La Manga - Costa Calida: See Cartagena from the vantage point offered by the sleek and modern panoramic lift at Calle Gisbert. Enjoy breathtaking views from the top of a mountain of standout landmarks such as the bullring, churches, castles, forts and many of the city’s most famous buildings.
The panoramic lift was built at the beginning of the millennium as part of an ambitious urban regeneration scheme and has surpassed all expectations by opening up a part of the city to visitors, who in turn have brought cultural, social and economic development. The idea was to link the street and the Castle of the Conception on top of a mountain through the 45 metre (150ft) tall lift shaft but the works helped uncover a series of large galleries inside the mountain that had served as shelters during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.
Among the panoramic views from the lift are the Military Hospital, Autopsy Pavilion and Antigone Barracks, which date from the 18th century and are now part of the university. See also the bullring, built in the 1850s over a first century Roman amphitheatre, the Moorish Castle and St Julian’s Castle, which protected the port, and the Church of Charity. There are also a series of outstanding modern buildings on view such as the House of the Student and the Auditorium.
Open every day from July 1 to September 16 between 10am and 2.30pm, and from 4pm to 8.30pm. During the off-season times range from 10am to 5.30pm or 7pm, opening from Tuesday to Sunday.
