Excursions in Chattanooga - TN: Come and discover one of the top-rated aquariums In the US in this visit to the state of the art Tennessee Aquarium at Chattanooga. Beneath the magnificent vaulted glass roof you’ll be able to explore three living forests and meet all kinds of amazing creatures in their natural habitats. Discover giant catfish, cute otters, enormous snapping turtles, fierce sharks, stealthy sting rays, playful penguins, mysterious jellyfish, free flying butterflies and more.
The Tennessee Aquarium features two buildings, Ocean Journey and River Journey. The River Journey exhibition focuses on freshwater environments, carrying you through mountain, forests, swamps, valley and lakes, both in the Tennessee Valley and throughout the world. Follow the path of a raindrop from high in the Appalachian Mountains down to the Gulf of Mexico through three living forest exhibits that teem with life above and below the water’s surface. Along the way, you’ll come face to face with thousands of animals including song birds, snapping turtles, sandbar and tiger sharks, stingrays, river otters, moray eels and colourful reef fish.
In the Ocean Journey, you’ll find many hands on displays, including a large shark tank and ray touch tank, large macaws, a butterfly garden with South American species on constant display, as well as the very large ocean tank itself. Other favourites include the Boneless Beauties gallery, where you can meet invertebrates including jellyfish, cuttlefish, octopus and spider crabs as well as Macaroni and Gentoo penguins.

Excursions in Chattanooga - TN: Discover Tennessee’s own Grand Canyon in this two hour scenic river cruise down the Tennessee River Gorge in the Tennessee Aquarium’s own boat, the River Gorge Explorer. This scenic waterway is a natural paradise that is home to a remarkable range of flora and fauna. The tour will be led by an expert naturalist from Tennessee Aquarium who will point out the wildlife and sites of historical interest along the way.
You’ll board the sleek River Gorge Explorer at the Chattanooga Pier. The 70-seater catamaran, the first of its kind in the south-eastern USA, will transport you downstream into Tennessee’s own Grand Canyon, the Tennessee River Gorge. Four water jets propel this hydrofoil-assisted vessel smoothly and swiftly downstream. Angled seating will allow you to relax in the climate-controlled cabin and enjoy the scenic beauty and wildlife through oversized windows.
The Tennessee River Gorge winds along 26 miles of the Tennessee River, and contains over 27,000 acres of protected land. It is the perfect setting for taking beautiful photos from the deck of the River Gorge Explorer.
Your guide will point the sites of historical interest from the American Civil War between Downtown Chattanooga and historic Pot Point as we leave the pier. Then once we enter the gorge, you’ll be able to keep an eye out for the fascinating flora and fauna that make this area their home, including many endangered species such as the Bald eagle and Mountain Skullcap.
