At Göreme Open Air Museum you can see several churches built into caves by Christians between the 10th and 13th centuries. In the museum you have a chance to visit several different churches and chapels. At the Cavusin old town, the church of St. John the Baptist rises on top of the hill. The church was built in the 5th century and it is the biggest cave church of Cappadocia even though it was divided into three rooms in 10th century against danger of collapsing. Most of the frescoes of St. John the Baptist church are faded by smoke but there are still some visible ones. Its cathedral-like proportions are also astounding.

The tour continues to Devrent Valley, and also Zelve Valley, known for its’ fairy chimneys with one resembling a camel and Karanlk Kilise (or the Dark Church) was a monastic compound built in the 11th century decorated with scenes from the New Testament. After the Turkish invasion it was used as a pigeon house until the 1950s. After 14 years of scraping pigeon droppings off the walls, these newly restored frescoes, depicting scenes from the New Testament, are the best preserved in all of Cappadocia and a fine example of 11th-century Byzantine art. Part of the narthex or vestibule however collapsed opening part of the church's roof to the sky. This caused damage to the fresco with Christ’s Ascension and the Benediction of the Saints, Elmal Kilise (or the Apple Church) a smaller cave church. Was built around 1050 and has carved into four irregular pillars the sign of a Greek cross with these pillars support its central dome. Restoration on the church was completed in 1991, but the frescoes continue to chip off, revealing a layer of earlier paintings underneath. The name of the church is believed to refer to a reddish orb in the left hand of the Archangel Michael in the dome of the main apse, or possibly to an apple tree that grew in the vicinity.

Although they can be found throughout Cappadocia, they are especially plentiful in this valley which must have one of the greatest collections of pigeon lofts in the world. They were carved wherever space allowed including abandoned caves and the walls of collapsed churches.
They lack the architectural interest of the doocots of Scotland or the elaborate Persian pigeon towers but their sheer numbers are astonishing. In Cappadocia, pigeons have long been a source of food and fertilizer. The advent of chemical fertilizers has reduced the use of pigeon fertilizer. However, some farmers still maintain their lofts because they insist that the reputation of Cappadocian fruits as the sweetest and most succulent in Turkey is entirely due to the pigeons’ droppings. You can admire the multicoloured rock formations of the famous Pigeon Valley, and Uchisar’s picturesque fairy chimneys. Take great pictures and enjoy.

This makes it an ideal place for growing fruit and vegetables which means the whole area of Kapadokya meets a lot of Turkey’s agricultural needs. in Paaba where you can see mushroom-like fairy-chimneys with multiple caps and stems situated in the middle of a vineyard. Then walk through Pasabaglar, used to be known as Valley of Monks.
Avanos Seramique: After Çavuin you go to Avanos, a small town known for its ceramics. Cappadocia Excursions & Tours - Turkish Bath
Cappadocia Excursions & Tours: The Turkish bath, also known as hamam or hammam, is one of the ancient world’s most widely exported customs. The tradition of the Turkish bath was born generations ago, adopted from Romans and Byzantines and then perfected by the Selcuk and Ottoman Turks and has continued even until today.
We offer the long-established hamam experience in a luxurious modern hamam carved out of a cave – allowing our guests the best of both worlds; old-world tradition in a modern, luxury setting. To help you relax after your daily adventures in Cappadocia, our professional masseurs offer a variety of services in addition to the hamam ritual. Our luxury hamam also features a sauna.
What happens in a Hamam?” Well, the ritual is simple. When you arrive to hamam , you will find yourself in the warmth. A room filled with the sound of splashing water, the scent of soap, and wafting steam through which daily concerns and worries cannot penetrate. In the gentle moist heat your body relaxes, and your nerves are soothed. You sit down at one of the marble wash basins which line the walls, and adjusting the temperature of the water to a delicious warmth, dip the copper bathing bowl into the basin and tip the water over your head and body. Waves of relaxation seem to pour right through you as the water envelops your body.
Laying on the warm stone in the center of the room, your attendant (tellak for men and natir for women) will pour hot water on you and begin to scrub every square inch of your body. Basically, every millimeter of dead and dirty skin is scrubbed off, even the skin between your fingers and toes.
Afterwards you are lathered with liquid soap and shampoo and given the choice of massage options . After the massage, the attendant will wash you from head to toe again as if you are a small child. One last shower and then it is time to leave the Sicaklik. Then you are given fresh towels and again brought to Sogukluk (the cool room) to rest, dry off and marvel at your glowing, soft as a baby’s skin.

Cappadocia Excursions & Tours - Underground City Tour
Cappadocia Excursions & Tours: Start this fantastic tour visiting the Pigeon Valley that has become quite popular with hikers. It is known by many names (Valley of the Pigeon Lofts, Dovecote Valley, and Pigeon Valley) but they all refer to the thousands of pigeon houses that have been carved into the soft tufa since ancient times. You can admire the multi-coloured rock formations of the famous Pigeon Valley, and Uchisar’s picturesque fairy chimneys. Following this the tour moves on to a panoramic view of Goreme. This valley was created from volcanic rocks which erosion over time has helped to create unique chimney-shaped rocks; here there is an ideal photo opportunity with views over Sword, Love and Red Valleys.
Next the tour visits Goreme Open Air Museum where you can see several churches built into caves by Christians between the 10th and 13th centuries with a chance to visit several different churches and chapels including Sakli Church, Kilislar and St Basil Churches. Moving on to Cavusin village, here there is a cave church considered one of the oldest ones in the area dating back to the 5th century AD. The next stop is in Pasabag where you can see mushroom-like fairy-chimneys with multiple caps and stems situated in the middle of a vineyard and then enjoy a walk through Pasabaglar, once known as the Valley of Monks.
After Cavusin we go to Avanos, a small town known for its ceramics and the Red River which runs through its’ centre and provides the clay used to make these ceramics. Lunch is taken here and we also visit a ceramics workshop to observe the pottery being made and decorated. After lunch we will be able to see more strangely shaped rock chimneys in Devrent and Zelve Valley before completing the tour with a visit to the spectacular Kaymakli Underground City.
Even though the whole city has not been completely opened, and since only 4 floors have been uncovered, it is certain that Kaymakli is one of the largest underground settlements in the region. The houses in the village are constructed around the nearly one hundred tunnels of the underground city. These are still used today as storage areas, stables, and cellars; of the four floors open to tourists, each space is organised around ventilation shafts. The number of the storage rooms in such a small area supports the idea that a great number of people resided here. Archaeologists think that this could have been up to 3500 people.
