After being picked up from your hotel, we’ll leave Auckland over the spectacular Harbour Bridge. Just sit back and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Hibiscus Coast as we head northwards towards Paihia, traditional jumping off point for the Bay of Islands.
On arrival at Paihia, you’ll visit the Waitangi Treaty House and grounds where the Founding Treaty of the Nation was founded and see a traditional Maori meeting house and a huge waka (war canoe).
Next you’ll board a catamaran for a memorable sightseeing cruise to Cape Brett and the Hole in the Rock. You’ll sail past secluded sandy beaches and rugged rocky outcrops as we head for Cape Brett Lighthouse. Remember to bring your camera because the variety of marine wildlife in these waters has to be seen to be believed. Whales, seals, dolphins, penguins are all common sights. Weather permitting we’ll pass through the famous Hole in the Rock at Motukokako Island and travel on to view the majestic Grand Cathedral Cave.

Then after a picnic lunch you’ll venture into an area of old growth rainforest with mature 1000 year old Kauri trees. Your guides will explain how New Zealand’s isolation means that 70% of the native plants are found nowhere else in the world. The tour starts when you are picked up from your hotel early in the morning. Sit back and enjoy the rolling farmland of the Waikato region as we drive southwards from Auckland, heading for the Waitomo cave system. The name Waitomo comes from the Maori “wai” water and “tomo”, hole or shaft and the caves were first systematically explored in the late 19th Century. You’ll find an impressive variety of wierd and wonderful rock formations that took millions of years to form.
The guided tour will take you through three different levels, linked by the tomo, a 16m deep limestone shaft. After passing through the network of tunnels known as the Catacombs we’ll descend to the Banquet Chamber where you can still early visitors’ cooking fires in the smoke on the ceiling of the chamber. Admire the amazing acoustics at the massive cavern known as the Cathedral before boarding a boat for an unforgettable ride on the underground Waitomo River through the Glow Worm Grotto.
The only illumination here comes from millions of tiny glow worms creating a sky of living lights, making for a truly unforgettable spectacle. Following the tour there will be some time for an optional lunch or for exploring the fascinating Visitor Centre before boarding the bus for the trip back to Auckland.

This non-strenuous half-hour walk on gravelled tracks and boardwalks will take you through unique wetlands with plenty of time to admire the giant Nikau palms and rare native flora and fauna.
Then we’ll drive through native bush and rugged peaks towards the secluded natural harbour at Port Fitzroy where we have a relaxed al fresco lunch Kiwi-style. From here it’s just a short drive down to a sweeping, stretch of pristine white sand. Enjoy a swim in the bracing waters of the Pacific Ocean or take a stroll along the beach to visit the graves of those drowned in the sinking of the SS Wairatapa, one of New Zealand’s worst maritime disasters.
This memorable day will come to an end with a spectacular climb to the top of Windy Canyon. The path winds around rocky outcrops and past sheer cliffs coated with rata vines and takes in breath-taking views of the island and beyond.
