Ausflüge in Salta - Excursion to Cafayate
Ausflüge in Salta: Savour the land of contrasts that is Cafayate with this intriguing tour that takes in the breathtaking badlands of the Quebrada de las Conchas and the picturesque wine country. Expect to see unusual geological curiosities and stunning scenery in this land of contrasts, and to taste wonderful wines.
Your adventure begins with a southward drive from Salta along Route 68 – which runs parallel to an ancient Inca trail – through the striking Lerma valley dotted with remote villages. This is the road that leads to the extraordinary Quebrada de las Conchas (Gorge of Shells) where over thousands of years, wind and water erosion have combined to carve out some spectacular shapes in the rocks. Look up in awe at a landscape of colours that features every shade of red, scarlet, orange, ochre, amber, brown, bronze, gold, copper and khaki imaginable. Look closely and observe the layers of limestone, each a different shade, piled upon each other. Among the somewhat fanciful monikers that have been dreamed up to try to capture these forms are the Amphitheatre, the Devil’s Throat, the Toad and the Castle but no name can truly convey the impressive grandeur of the actual rocks.
Continue to Cafayate, the centre of a wine-producing area that goes back to the early 19th century. The wine country’s fertility offers a stark contrast to the arid badlands. The region’s unique climate and soil contribute to the special properties of its wines, and there will be plenty of opportunities to visit some of the many wineries in the area, which is famed for the Torrontes wine.

Ausflüge in Salta - Visit to San Antonio de los Cobres
Ausflüge in Salta: A visit to San Antonio de los Cobres is more than a trip to a charming old mining town in Argentina’s far northwest – it’s a journey of discovery that takes in some of the eeriest landscapes in the country. This full day tour features attractions as varied as massive railway viaducts, giant cacti, remote villages, majestic mountains and archaeological museums.
Depart Salta along the route parallel to the famous ‘Train to the Clouds’ railway. Once you reach Quebrada del Toro (Gorge of the Bull), the scenery will begin to change from dense vegetation, becoming more arid and dotted with cardones, the tallest cactus species of all, which has been known to grow to almost 20 metres. See the imposing viaducts and bridges of the ‘Train to the Clouds’ such as El Toro, Alisal and Chorrillo.
Pass through small mountain villages such as El Candado, El Gólgota and Alfarcito, where white colonial-era churches and old adobe buildings house small farming communities. Arrive at Santa Rosa de Tastil and visit the village’s archaeological museum and the ancient pre-Incan ruins, where housing and streets can still be clearly seen. Continue through Finca La Encrucijada, to ascend the face of Muñano Cliff and arrive at Abra Blanca, at more than 4,000 metres above sea level, where the air is so thin that the locals have the largest lung capacity in the world. Finally, stop at the small mining town of San Antonio de los Cobres, and visit the Polvorilla Viaduct, an incredible rickety steel structure rising 63 metres above the valley floor.
Meeting/pick-up point: Collection from hotels.
