Ausflüge in Avignon: Provence has become a byword for perfection, a sunny, colourful and fragrant Utopia where you can escape from it all. This full-day sightseeing excursion will bring you into the heart of the region to some of its most beautiful villages and landmarks.
Your adventure begins on the road to the Pont du Gard, one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in the world. Standing 50 metres tall over the River Gardon, this Unesco World Heritage Site has withstood the ravages of time for almost 2,000 years.
Have your camera at the ready for the next stop, the hilltop village of Les Baux-de-Provence. You will wander its winding streets of medieval houses and many Romanesque and Renaissance buildings. We’ll also stop at the beautiful town of Saint-Remy-de-Provence, where you will see the ruins of the Roman triumphal arch and mausoleum. St-Remy was immortalised in Van Gogh’s painting, The Starry Night.
Then it’s on to the lush Luberon valley, passing olive groves and vineyards. We’ll stop at Roussillon, a village famed for its ochre cliffs and unusual natural landscape. Soon we’ll reach Gordes, a hilltop village considered by many to be the most beautiful in France. Between June 15 and July 15, you can admire the blooming lavender fields from Senanque Abbey. A sight that’s the essence of Provence.
There’s a visit to the Lavender Museum (except in January) and in July and August you can watch the distillation process. On Sundays, the tour visits L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a village renowned for its antique shops.
The order of visits depends on which village is hosting its weekly market: Gordes on Tuesday; St-Remy on Wednesday; Roussillon on Thursday; and in L’Isle on Sunday.

Enjoy wine tasting in an estate at the foot of the Alpilles mountains. The wines of Les Baux are defined by the unique, multi-faceted character of the soil, naturally protected and dried by the mistral wind. Les-Baux-de-Provence wines have been officially recognised since 1995 as having ‘Registered Designation of Origin’, or Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée in French.

You will have the chance to visit a domaine for a guided tour capped off with wines tastings of the local red, white and rosé wine varieties. Usually, four or five different wines are tasted. You’ll also learn about terroir grape varieties, vinification and ageing cellars.
Wine from made from vines dotted around the picturesque village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape has been renowned since the 14th century, when it was a favourite tipple of Pope John XXII. Indeed, the name would translate as ‘Newcastle of the Pope’. The ruins of a castle stand over the town to this day.
If you take the tour on either a Monday or Tuesday, there will be visits to two separate domaines for the tastings.
And if you take the tour on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, it consists of one wine tasting tour and a visit of the Roman Theatre at Orange, some 15km away from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Admission and an audioguide are included.
This Unesco World Heritage Site dates from the 1st century BC and has survived attacks over the centuries by the religious fanatics and barbarians among others before falling into ruin. Today, operas and plays are once again performed in front of packed audiences.

A gourmand experience in a Provençal market in either location is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Exceptional wine, cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables that taste like they used to can all be purchased for your enjoyment. The produce is of course wondrous, sold directly by the producers to you in the delightful atmosphere of these quaint and picturesque villages.
Onwards through more beautiful scenery, the tour continues to the Lavender Museum in Costellet to learn about the production of the lovely lavender essential oil which is symbolic of this region. If you are fortunate to be visiting between June 15 and July 15, you can also breathe the scent of Provence with a stop at Senanque Abbey to take pictures of the marvellous blooming lavender fields.

It is also a real treat to see the Maison Carrée in all its glory, looking as good as the day as it was built in 16BC.
As the seat of a duke, a bishop and a consul, Uzès has preserved its character as a medieval stronghold. In this charming town you can see the picture-postcard Place aux Herbes, home to a delightful, colourful market and otherwise a relaxing shady spot to rest and soak in the ambiance. Admire the Fenestrelle bell tower with its many arched windows and which lends itself to its other name, the ‘Window Tower’. The 42-metre-high circular tower is the belfry of the cathedral of St Theodorit, which is home to the relics of said saint.

We will get the chance to snap some photos at Senanque Abbey set amongst the lavender fields; we will be able to see the well-known Cistercian church that is still to this day ruled by monks.

This landscape was painted several times by Vincent van Gogh. There will be free time to wander Les-Baux-de-Provence and its historic centre, the museum of santons, the Hotel des Porcelets, a beautiful house from the 16th century, and St Vincent’s Church. Soak in the atmosphere with a walking tour through Arles, marvelling at its Roman heritage. Admire the Roman amphitheatre and theatre as well as the local landmarks that were painted by Van Gogh between 1888 and 1890 such as La Maison Jaune, Le Cafe La Nuit, Le Jardin De l'Hotel Dieu. Visit the medieval village of Les-Baux-de-Provence, a village located upon a 245 metre-high rock outcrop where you can enjoy a walking tour. Taking a stroll through the Roman city of Arles allows you to admire its arena and ancient theatre. Arles is also home to many locations painted by Van Gogh, including La Maison Jaune, Le Café De Nuit and Le Jardin de l'Hotel Dieu. On Saturdays, there is free time to stroll and soak in the weekly market in Arles.
